BrownGirlsLove POWER Day 2019

A recap of all the magic we experienced at our 4th annual event!

If you attended BrownGirlsLove POWER Day Presented By Toyota this past weekend, chances are you’re still floating like I am. It’s going to be really hard for me to capture in words how special this weekend was, but I’m going to give it my best shot. Power Day was an explosion of black girl magic in so many ways. Here are some of the highlights from the day:

We kicked things off in the morning with a really cool networking exercise. Everyone was given a small key with a quote attached to it. You were charged with walking around and finding someone else who had the same quote as you on their key, and striking up a conversation. The purpose of the activity was for each person to meet someone new, share their story and hopefully unlock a new friendship or new opportunities with their “key”. Loved this part!

Our first panel of the day was “The Art of Authentic Storytelling” featuring Julee Wilson Wareham, Brittany Hennessy, Courtney Danielle and Samantha Smikle. The ladies dropped so many gems about how to tell your authentic story when you’re building a personal brand or business.

Next up we had our “Favor & Finances” panel moderated by Paulana Lamonier. This panel was for boss women trying to manage how to climb the ladder of financial success while still staying rooted in purpose. Our panelists Nichole Lynel, Janell Stephens and Koereyelle Dubose lit up the stage with wisdom and power. These are three of my favorite girl bosses so I’m honored they accepted the call to be part of this conversation.

During Power Lunch, we did everything from twirl on the Toyota 360 photobooth to shop the BrownGirlsLove marketplace for free products.

Attendees also had the opportunity to shop our amazing vendors like A Log Cabin In Brooklyn and Crown Candle Co. At the BrownGirlsLove table, our sweatshirts and canvas bags were a huge hit! You can purchase those online here.

Upstairs in the VIP lounge, our speakers mixed and mingled and snapped photos in front of the My Black Is Beautiful living wall. Makeup touch-ups were provided by Hue Noir courtesy celebrity MUA Keys Rebelle. My event day makeup look featured Hue Noir foundation in Hazelnut.

After lunch, Gia Peppers moderated our “Your Brand Matters” panel discussion featuring Sherria Cotton, Uchenna & Chioma Ngwudo and Keisha Mabry. The energy was so high and attendees walked away with some key takeaways for making an impact whether your brand is big or small.

So many of us are looking into producing our own events, so we had a chat about the basics of event production, moderated by Robin J. Our panelists Candace Montgomery, Ylorie Taylor, Sabrina Boissiere and Makini Martin gave their take on event planning and how to do it seamlessly.

Next, we talked self-care and mental health with a few boss babes who know all about it. Our “Drop The Cape” conversation, sponsored by My Black Is Beautiful, was moderated by Rashida Selise and featured Simone Gittens, Kelli Coleman, Toya Poplar, Melissa Chanel, and Tracy Garraud.

Last, but not least, was the Keynote Q&A with mogul and legend Lisa Price. The founder of iconic beauty brand Carol’s Daughter, Lisa Price made this a complete full circle moment by agreeing to speak on the Power Day stage.

14 years ago I had the pleasure of interviewing her for my college magazine as a FRESHMAN. It’s so hard to believe that I finally had the opportunity to interview her live, as an entrepreneur myself, when she inspired so much of my journey early on.

I am so beyond grateful to everyone who participated and made this weekend a success! Thank you to our wonderful roster of powerhouse speakers who poured into the room and shared their knowledge and wisdom.

Many thanks to our Presenting Sponsor Toyota for providing us with the foundation to pull this event off. To our amazing staff of volunteers and production crew who poured over every single detail of this event to make it absolutely perfect - I can’t thank you enough.
